Recall 15V602 affects 6,786 2014-2015 Honda Accord Hybrid vehicles for hybrid-system software that can stall the vehicle. Repair is free at any franchised Honda dealer.
Honda is recalling 6,786 2014-2015 Accord Hybrid vehicles because electrical interference can force the hybrid system into fail-safe mode, shut off the gasoline engine, and limit speed to 40 miles per hour. Once the battery runs down, the vehicle can stall and increase crash risk; Honda dealers will complete the free repair.

What's wrong?
The hybrid propulsion system in the 2014-2015 Honda Accord Hybrid coordinates the gasoline engine, high-voltage battery, inverter, motor circuits, and cell voltage sensor. The sensor reads battery cell voltage so the control system knows how much electric power is available. Under normal operation, that information helps the car blend gasoline and electric power without forcing the system into a protective mode.
On affected Accord Hybrid vehicles, the cell voltage sensor circuit was changed to address digital television reception issues, but that change reduced its resistance to electrical noise. Noise from the high-voltage battery inverter and motor circuits can be read incorrectly by the sensor. When that happens, the hybrid system enters fail-safe electric mode, shuts off the gasoline engine, limits speed to 40 miles per hour, and runs only on battery power. After the battery is discharged, the vehicle stalls.
Owners were given visual and audible warnings when the system entered fail-safe electric mode. Treat those alerts as the warning sign and move out of traffic as safely as traffic allows.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Honda technician updates the hybrid system software covered by recall 15V602. The software update and labor are free under the recall. Honda says the new vehicle warranty would have provided this repair at no cost before the owner letter, so there is no separate reimbursement program for this campaign. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
