What's wrong?
The transmission control software in the 2014-2015 Honda Fit and Civic manages the continuously variable transmission, or CVT. The CVT uses hydraulic pressure to move internal pulleys and keep engine power flowing to the front wheels. One of those parts is the drive pulley shaft, which carries load inside the transmission while the pulleys change ratio during driving.
On these Honda vehicles, the software uses high hydraulic pressure during certain CVT operating modes. That pressure puts extra stress on the drive pulley shaft. Honda also found that some shafts were built at the low end of the hardness specification. When a lower-hardness shaft is hit with repeated high-stress operation, fatigue cracks can start inside the shaft and the shaft can break while the vehicle is moving.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner is not told to watch for a sound, light, or change in shifting before the shaft breaks.
Who's affected?
Fit is listed for 2015; Civic is listed for 2014 and 2015, both tied to the automatic transmission control module.

What's the safety risk?
A damaged transmission drive pulley shaft can break while driving. If that happens, the Honda can lose acceleration or the front wheels can lock, increasing the risk of a crash. Schedule the transmission software update soon, and drive cautiously until the repair is complete. Repair is free at any franchised Honda dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2014-2015 Honda Fit or Civic is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Honda dealer to schedule the free transmission software update that corrects the transmission settings linked to drive pulley shaft damage.
- Bring the recall notice if Honda mailed one. If not, reference recall number 15V574 when you call.
- Drive cautiously until the software update is complete, and leave extra following distance in case acceleration changes or the front wheels lock up.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Honda technician updates the transmission control software for the recalled Civic or Fit. The software update is free under the recall, and parts and labor are covered. Honda says the new vehicle warranty would have covered this transmission software problem without owner payment, so there is no separate pre-notice reimbursement program. If you have prior repair paperwork, ask the Honda service desk how the new vehicle warranty applies to that repair history.
