Turtle Top is recalling 14 2014-2015 Vanterra, Odyssey, and Odyssey XLT transit buses because the backup camera image can appear reversed. A driver can misjudge whether a person or object is on the left or right side of the bus, raising crash risk; Turtle Top dealers will repair the camera system free of charge.

What's wrong?

The rear observation camera on 2014-2015 Turtle Top Vanterra, Odyssey, and Odyssey XLT buses is part of the back over prevention system. It sends a live image from the rear of the bus to a monitor near the driver, so the driver can judge what is behind the vehicle while backing up. The system depends on the image matching the real left and right sides behind the bus.

On affected buses, the Voyager rear observation camera has defective potting material around the circuit board. That material can damage a 0 Ohm resistor, which is a small electrical part used to route current through the camera circuit. When that resistor is damaged, the camera can send a mirror image to the monitor instead of the intended view.

There is no warning sign before the mirrored image appears. The monitor can look active and usable, but the left and right sides of the rear view are reversed, so a driver can steer based on the wrong side of the image.

Who's affected?

Covers three Turtle Top bus models across the 2014 and 2015 model years, all tied to the camera system.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included.

What's the safety risk?

A mirrored camera display can show a person or object on the opposite side from where it is around the vehicle, increasing crash risk. There is no warning sign before the image appears wrong, so check surroundings directly and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Turtle Top dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2014-2015 Turtle Top Vanterra, Odyssey, or Odyssey XLT is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Turtle Top dealer to schedule the free camera-unit replacement that fixes the reversed backup-camera image.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Turtle Top has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 15V526 when you call.
  4. Avoid relying only on the backup camera until the camera unit is replaced; use mirrors and direct visual checks when backing.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Turtle Top technician replaces the back up camera unit so the display no longer shows the camera image in reverse. The recall repair is available now, and the camera unit, parts, and labor are free under campaign 15V526. Turtle Top is working with ASA Electronics on owner notification and service support for the replacement. Contact Turtle Top customer service or ASA Electronics if the dealer needs the recall number or parts support for the camera change.

What is recall 15V526?

Recall 15V526 covers 14 2014-2015 Turtle Top Vanterra, Odyssey, and Odyssey XLT transit buses with a back-up camera image that can appear reversed. A person or object shown on one side of the screen can actually be on the other side of the vehicle, increasing crash risk.

What should I do if my 2014-2015 Turtle Top Vanterra, Odyssey, or Odyssey XLT is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific bus is included in recall 15V526. If it is, contact a franchised Turtle Top dealer to schedule replacement of the camera unit. Reference recall number 15V526 and Turtle Top recall number 15E-050 when you call.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost, and Turtle Top dealers will replace the affected camera unit free of charge. The recall began on September 18, 2015, so the dealer repair is available now.
