Ford is recalling 7,165 2015-2016 Explorer, Flex, Taurus, Mkt, and Mks vehicles because the parking brake does not fully engage when applied. If the transmission is left in a gear other than Park on a slope, the vehicle can roll away and increase crash risk; Ford dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?
The parking brake on the 2015-2016 Ford Explorer, Mkt, Mks, Flex, and Taurus is the separate brake that holds the vehicle still after it is parked. In this system, pressing the foot-actuated lever moves parts inside the parking brake control assembly so the brake stays applied without constant pedal pressure.
The problem is inside that control assembly. A stamped metal bracket was made out of alignment after supplier tooling maintenance, so the bracket no longer sat parallel as designed. When the parking brake is applied, the pawl, a small locking catch, can miss the sector gear, the toothed part that it is supposed to lock into. When that happens, the parking brake does not fully engage.
An owner can notice the foot-actuated parking brake lever returning to the released position after it is pushed down. That is the warning sign that the parking brake did not stay applied.

What's the safety risk?
If the parking brake does not fully engage and the transmission is left out of Park on a slope, the vehicle can roll away and increase the risk of a crash. Watch for the foot-actuated parking brake lever returning to the released position after you apply it. Use Park every time and schedule the recall repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2015-2016 Explorer, Mkt, Mks, Flex, or Taurus is included in this Ford recall.
- Contact a franchised Ford dealer to schedule the free parking-brake test and, if needed, the parking brake control assembly replacement that fixes a parking brake that does not fully engage.
- Bring the recall notice if Ford mailed one. If not, reference recall number 15V464 when you call.
- Park on level ground when practical, shift into Park before exiting, and use extra care on slopes until the repair is complete.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ford technician tests the parking brake system to confirm whether it fully engages. If the test shows the control assembly needs replacement, the technician replaces the parking brake control assembly at no charge. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Ford is not offering a separate reimbursement program for this campaign because the original warranty program provides a free repair for this concern. If you already have paperwork for a related parking brake repair, ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies to that repair.
