2007-2012 Chevrolet SUVs Recall 15V415: Liftgate Struts

Recall 15V415 covers 691,144 2007-2012 Traverse, Enclave, Acadia, and Outlook vehicles with liftgate struts that wear early. Repair is free at any franchised Chevrolet dealer.

Chevrolet is recalling 691,144 2007-2012 Traverse, Enclave, Acadia, and Outlook vehicles with the power liftgate option because worn gas struts can let the open liftgate fall suddenly. A falling liftgate can strike someone and raise injury risk; Chevrolet dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The power liftgate on 2007-2012 Traverse, Enclave, Acadia, and Outlook vehicles uses gas struts to hold the rear hatch open. Those struts are pressurized supports, similar to small lift cylinders, that carry the weight of the liftgate after the motor raises it. When they work correctly, the open liftgate stays up without dropping on its own.

On affected vehicles, the struts are positioned so dirt particles get between the piston rod and the guide bushing. That contamination wears the struts before the end of their intended life. The liftgate software is also unable to detect and stop a liftgate with weakened struts from falling after it has opened.

Owners have warning signs before the liftgate drops. As the struts wear, the Prop Rod Recovery system returns the liftgate slowly toward the closed position. The vehicle also gives audible warnings and flashes the tail lamps to show there is a problem.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.

What's the safety risk?

If the open liftgate falls unexpectedly, it can strike someone standing near or under it, increasing injury risk. As the gas struts wear, the system returns the liftgate slowly toward closed and gives audible warnings with flashing tail lamps. Treat those warnings as a reason to keep people clear and schedule the repair. Repair is free at any franchised Chevrolet dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2012 Chevrolet Traverse, Enclave, Acadia, or Outlook is included in this recall.
  2. Contact your nearest franchised Chevrolet dealer to schedule the free power-liftgate software update that prevents rapid liftgate closing after strut wear.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Chevrolet mailed one. If not, reference recall number 15V415 when you call.
  4. Keep people clear of the open liftgate until the repair is complete, especially when loading cargo or helping passengers in the rear area.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Chevrolet technician updates the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit. The update changes how the liftgate motor responds so the open liftgate does not close rapidly. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. If you already paid for a related power liftgate repair within GM's reimbursement window, ask Chevrolet customer service or the dealer service desk about GM's reimbursement plan and bring your repair paperwork.
