2007-2015 Eldorado Axess/E-Z/Xhf Recall 15V316: Oil

Recall 15V316 affects 599 2007-2015 Eldorado Axess, Xhf, and E-Z Rider Ii vehicles for an engine-oil fire risk. Cummins service centers repair it free.

Eldorado is recalling 599 2007-2015 Axess, Xhf, and E-Z Rider Ii vehicles equipped with certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines because excessive crankcase pressure can detach the 90-degree vent tube elbow. Oil on hot engine surfaces increases the risk of fire, and Eldorado dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The 2007-2015 Eldorado Axess, Xhf, and E-Z Rider Ii buses in this recall use certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines with an open crankcase ventilation breather. That breather filters oil from pressurized gases that escape the crankcase during normal engine operation, then a vent tube routes those gases down toward the bottom of the engine.

The failure starts when crankcase pressure rises too high. In known incidents, the main cause was a cracked piston. Under that pressure, the barbs on the breather exit tube do not hold the 90-degree elbow tightly enough, so the elbow can detach from the vent tube assembly. Once it separates, engine oil can reach hot surfaces.

Before the elbow separates, an owner or driver can notice loss of engine power, amber or red engine diagnostic lamps, or erratic engine operation. Treat those signs as a reason to keep the bus out of service until Eldorado service support inspects the engine and vent tube.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included.

What's the safety risk?

Engine oil on a hot surface raises the risk of a fire. High crankcase pressure can also bring engine power loss, amber or red engine diagnostic lamps, or erratic engine operation. If those signs appear, pull over safely and arrange service. Repair is free at any franchised Eldorado dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2015 Eldorado Axess, Xhf, or E-Z Rider Ii vehicle is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Eldorado dealer or Cummins service center to schedule the free repair that secures the 90-degree vent-tube elbow and updates the ECM to limit crankcase pressure.
  3. Bring the recall notice if you received one. If not, reference recall number 15V316 when you call.
  4. Keep the vehicle out of service if you smell oil, see smoke, or see oil near hot engine surfaces before the repair.
  5. Call Eldorado customer service at 1-909-591-9557 with questions about the recall or repair scheduling.

What happens at the repair

At the Cummins service center, the repair team secures the ends of the 90-degree elbow in the crankcase ventilation system and reprograms the ECM. The software update adjusts engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressure. These repairs are free under the recall. Eldorado has a general reimbursement plan on file for documented, related repairs paid before the recall notice. Ask the service desk or Eldorado customer service how to submit repair paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 15V316?

Recall 15V316 covers 599 2007-2015 Eldorado Axess, Xhf, and E-Z Rider Ii vehicles with certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines. Excessive crankcase pressure can detach a 90-degree vent tube elbow, allowing engine oil to contact hot surfaces and increasing fire risk.

What should I do if my 2007-2015 Eldorado Axess, Xhf, or E-Z Rider Ii is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 15V316. If it is, contact Eldorado customer service at 1-909-591-9557 or Cummins customer service at 1-800-343-7357 to arrange the free repair through a Cummins service center.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the defect repair at no cost, and the recall remedy says Cummins service centers will perform the work free of charge. The repair includes securing the 90-degree elbow ends and reprogramming the electronic control module software.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is fire. If excessive crankcase pressure detaches the vent tube elbow, engine oil can reach hot surfaces. If your VIN is included, arrange the free Cummins service center repair and ask Eldorado or Cummins whether the vehicle needs special handling before service.

When did recall 15V316 begin?

Recall 15V316 began on June 16, 2015. Cummins notified owners on Eldorado's behalf, but a used vehicle or fleet vehicle still needs a VIN check because owner records change and the year, make, and model alone do not confirm inclusion.
