What's wrong?
The passenger side frontal air bag inflator in these 2001-2006 Nissan vehicles is the metal canister that fills the air bag during a front crash. When the crash sensors call for deployment, the inflator burns propellant and sends gas into the passenger air bag so it cushions the occupant.
In this recall, the Takata SPI and PSPI front passenger inflators can build excessive internal pressure during deployment. That pressure can rupture the inflator instead of sending gas only into the air bag. Nissan reported two paths under investigation: Takata production issues at plants in Monclova, Mexico and Moses Lake, Washington, and loss of seal integrity in the inflator body over time, which lets outside air enter the inflator.
There is no warning sign before failure. The problem appears during air bag deployment, so an owner will not hear, smell, or feel a clear symptom during normal driving.
