2001-2006 Nissan Recall 15V287: Air Bag Inflator Rupture

Recall 15V287 covers 1,090,569 2001-2006 Nissan vehicles with passenger air bag inflators that can rupture. Repair is free at any franchised Nissan dealer.

Nissan is recalling 1,090,569 2001-2006 Nissan and INFINITI vehicles, including Sentra, Maxima, Pathfinder, FX35, and QX4 models, because the passenger frontal air bag inflator can rupture during deployment. In a crash, metal fragments can strike occupants and cause serious injury or death; Nissan dealers will replace the inflator free of charge.

What's wrong?

The passenger side frontal air bag inflator in these 2001-2006 Nissan vehicles is the metal canister that fills the air bag during a front crash. When the crash sensors call for deployment, the inflator burns propellant and sends gas into the passenger air bag so it cushions the occupant.

In this recall, the Takata SPI and PSPI front passenger inflators can build excessive internal pressure during deployment. That pressure can rupture the inflator instead of sending gas only into the air bag. Nissan reported two paths under investigation: Takata production issues at plants in Monclova, Mexico and Moses Lake, Washington, and loss of seal integrity in the inflator body over time, which lets outside air enter the inflator.

There is no warning sign before failure. The problem appears during air bag deployment, so an owner will not hear, smell, or feel a clear symptom during normal driving.

What's the safety risk?

If the passenger frontal air bag deploys in a crash, the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, risking serious injury or death. There is no warning sign before this failure, so schedule the repair soon if your VIN is included. Repair is free at any franchised Nissan dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2001-2006 Nissan or INFINITI Pathfinder, FX35, I30, FX45, Sentra, Maxima, QX4, or I35 is included in this recall.

  3. Bring the recall notice if Nissan mailed one. If not, reference recall number 15V287 when you call.
  4. Avoid placing passengers in the front passenger seat until the repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Nissan technician replaces the passenger air bag inflator covered by the recall. The replacement parts and labor are free of charge. This repair addresses the inflator that can rupture during passenger frontal air bag deployment. If you paid for this passenger air bag inflator repair before the owner notice, Nissan's reimbursement statement covers the cost of that earlier repair. Ask the dealer service desk how to submit the claim paperwork.
