2013-2015 Lincoln Mkz/Fusion/Edge Recall 15V250: Motor Bolts

Recall 15V250 covers 487,301 2013-2015 Lincoln Mkz, Fusion, and Edge vehicles for corroded steering motor bolts. Repair is free at any franchised Lincoln dealer.

Lincoln is recalling 487,301 2013-2015 Mkz, Fusion, and Edge vehicles in salt-belt states because road salt can corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts. If those bolts fail, the motor can detach, power steering assist can drop out, and Lincoln dealers will replace the bolts or steering gear free of charge.

What's wrong?

The electric power steering system on affected 2013-2015 Lincoln Mkz, Fusion, and Edge vehicles uses an electric motor mounted to the steering gear. That motor adds assist when you turn the wheel, so the driver does not have to supply all the steering force by hand. The motor has to stay firmly attached to the steering gear housing for the assist to work correctly.

On vehicles exposed to long-term road salt, snow or water carrying salt and other contaminants can corrode the bolts that hold the steering gear motor in place. As the bolts weaken, the motor can partially separate from the steering gear housing. When that happens, the steering assist no longer works as designed, and steering effort can increase.

Owners can notice motor whine, clunking noises, or warning lights before the failure gets worse. The Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control malfunction indicator lamps can also turn on.

Who's affected?

The Fusion and Mkz span 2013-2015, while the Edge is limited to 2015; all list the same power steering system component.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle.

What's the safety risk?

Corroded steering gear motor bolts can let the motor separate from the gear housing, causing loss of power steering assist. That means higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increased crash risk. Watch for motor whine, clunking noises, or ESC and traction control malfunction lamps. Repair is free at any franchised Lincoln dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2013-2015 Lincoln Mkz, Fusion, or Edge is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Lincoln dealer to schedule the free steering-gear inspection and repair.
  3. Bring the recall notice if you have it. Reference recall number 15V250 when you call.
  4. Schedule the steering gear motor bolt sealer and replacement work that prevents bolt corrosion from causing loss of power steering assist.
  5. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete, especially at low speeds where steering effort is higher without power assist.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Lincoln technician applies sealer to the steering gear motor bolt area and replaces the steering gear motor bolts as required. If attachment bolts are broken or missing, the technician installs a new steering gear. Parts and labor are free under the recall. Lincoln offered reimbursement for eligible owner paid repairs made before the recall notice under its general reimbursement plan. That eligibility period ended December 1, 2015, so bring any prior steering repair paperwork to the service desk and ask how this campaign was handled.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 15V250?

Recall 15V250 covers 487,301 2013-2015 Lincoln Mkz, Fusion, and Edge vehicles in listed cold-weather states and D.C. Road salt corrosion can damage electric power steering gear motor bolts, causing loss of power steering assist. Lincoln dealers will seal and replace bolts, or install a new steering gear, for free.

What should I do if my 2013-2015 Lincoln Mkz, Fusion, or Edge is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 15V250. If it is, contact a franchised Lincoln dealer and reference recall number 15S14. The dealer will inspect the steering gear motor bolts and complete the free repair that applies to your vehicle.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and the recall remedy states that these repairs are free. A Lincoln dealer will apply sealer and replace the steering gear motor bolts, or install a new steering gear if required.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is loss of power steering assist. If corrosion causes the steering gear motor attachment bolts to break or detach, steering takes more effort, especially at lower speeds, increasing crash risk. The free dealer repair addresses the corroded bolt condition.

What if I bought this vehicle used?

The free recall repair still applies. Ownership history does not remove the manufacturer's duty to repair an open safety recall. Check your VIN, then contact a franchised Lincoln dealer with recall number 15S14 so the service desk can confirm parts and schedule the repair.
