What's wrong?
The aerial ladder on 2000-2014 Sutphen Sp 110, Sph 100, Spi 112, and Sai 110 fire apparatus uses main extension cables to move the ladder sections out and back in. Those cables run over sheaves, which are pulley wheels that guide the wire rope as the extend and retract system works. The ladder depends on the cables, sheaves, and bearings moving together under load.
On affected units, the main extension cables can lose load-carrying strength and fail. Sutphen found examples where sheave bearings had seized, so the sheaves stopped turning and the wire rope slid over fixed metal instead of rolling over a moving pulley. That friction wore the cables down. Sutphen also found an incident after refurbishment where undersized replacement cables had been installed, which led to the ladder de-scoping.
Operators can notice heavy noise from the sheaves when bearings fail. A proper inspection can also show visible cable wear or other problems on the cables and sheaves.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific truck is included.
What's the safety risk?
A cable failure can let the ladder collapse while someone is using it, increasing injury risk. Loud sheave bearing noise or visible cable or sheave wear is a reason to take the ladder out of service and arrange inspection. Repair is free at any franchised Sutphen dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2000-2014 Sutphen Sp 110, Sph 100, Spi 112, or Sai 110 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Sutphen dealer to schedule the free aerial-ladder inspection and repair for the main extension cable.
- Bring the recall notice if Sutphen mailed one. If not, reference recall number 14V718 when you call.
- Keep the aerial ladder out of service until Sutphen completes the inspection and any needed ladder repair or replacement.
- Call Sutphen customer service at 1-866-287-5549 with questions about the repair.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Sutphen technician inspects the aerial ladder and main extension cable, then repairs or replaces the ladder as needed. The recall repair is available now, and the inspection plus any parts or labor are free of charge. Ask the service desk to confirm the ladder work is tied to recall 14V718 before the truck returns to service. Keep the repair order with the vehicle's maintenance records.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 14V718?
Recall 14V718 covers 181 2000-2014 Sutphen Sp 110, Sph 100, Spi 112, and Sai 110 aerial devices with a main extension cable that can fail. Sutphen dealers will inspect and repair or replace the ladders free of charge.
What should I do if my 2000-2014 Sutphen Sp 110, Sph 100, Spi 112, or Sai 110 is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific aerial device is included in recall 14V718. If it is, contact a franchised Sutphen dealer or Sutphen customer service at 1-866-287-5549 to arrange the ladder inspection and needed repair or replacement. The repair is free.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Sutphen's remedy says dealers will inspect and repair or replace the aerial ladders free of charge. Parts and labor are covered for the recall repair.
What is the safety risk?
The safety risk is ladder collapse during use if the main extension cable fails. That increases injury risk to a user on or near the aerial ladder. Confirm the VIN, then arrange the free inspection and repair or replacement before relying on the ladder in service.
What if I bought this Sutphen aerial device used?
The free recall repair still applies. Federal recall law follows the vehicle, not the first owner. Check your VIN to confirm inclusion in recall 14V718, then reference the recall number when you contact a franchised Sutphen dealer or Sutphen customer service.
