2012 Etnyre Trailer Recall 14V067: Slack Adjuster Housing

Recall 14V067 covers 245 2012 Etnyre Asphalt Trailer, Heavy Haul Trailer, and Live Bottom Trailer units for slack adjusters. Defective parts were replaced free.

Etnyre is recalling 245 2012 Asphalt Trailer, Heavy Haul Trailer, and Live Bottom Trailer trailers equipped with Gunite Automatic Slack Adjusters. Incomplete casting can weaken the slack adjuster housing and cause loss of braking, increasing crash risk; the dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?

The automatic slack adjuster is part of the air brake system on the 2012 Etnyre Asphalt Trailer, Heavy Haul Trailer, and Live Bottom Trailer. Its job is to keep the brake linkage adjusted as the brake lining wears, so the brakes apply with the correct movement when air pressure pushes the system to stop the trailer.

On the recalled trailers, the Gunite automatic slack adjuster housing has weak cast iron. During casting, the iron did not bond completely, a defect the filing describes as incomplete "knitting." Under normal brake loads, that weak housing can break at the handle, leaving the brake adjustment hardware unable to do its job as designed.

There is no warning sign before failure. A driver or technician should treat brake hardware damage, broken slack adjuster parts, or uneven brake response as a reason to park the trailer and have the air brake system inspected.

Who's affected?

Covers three Etnyre trailer types from the 2012 model year, all tied to the same brake system component.

A matching year and trailer model does not confirm inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific trailer is included.

What's the safety risk?

Slack adjusters with this flow notch can crack during normal braking, causing loss of braking and increasing crash risk. Schedule the repair promptly if your VIN is included, and avoid hauling until the dealer confirms the trailer is ready. Repair will be free at any franchised Etnyre dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2012 Etnyre Asphalt Trailer, Heavy Haul Trailer, or Live Bottom Trailer is included in this recall.
  2. Contact Etnyre customer service at 1-800-995-2116 to confirm whether the free slack-adjuster replacement has already been completed.
  3. Reference recall number 14V067 when you call Etnyre or a franchised Etnyre dealer.
  4. Schedule the free slack-adjuster replacement that fixes the brake adjuster housing that can break under normal braking loads.
  5. Avoid hauling or towing with the trailer until Etnyre confirms the slack-adjuster repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

Owner notification started in April 2011, and Etnyre reported that the defective Gunite Automatic Slack Adjusters were replaced free of charge. At the dealer, an Etnyre technician replaces the defective slack adjuster so the housing is no longer left in service with the casting defect described in the recall. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. For any trailer still showing this open campaign, ask an Etnyre service contact to confirm the slack adjuster replacement before putting the trailer back into regular use.
