What's wrong?
The fuel pump module sits at the fuel tank and sends gasoline forward to the engine. On the affected 2007-2009 G5, Cobalt, Torrent, Equinox, and Ion vehicles, the plastic supply and return ports are part of that module. Those ports connect the fuel lines that carry gasoline out to the engine and back through the fuel system.
The problem is in the plastic port itself. A supply or return port on the fuel pump module can crack. Once that port opens, gasoline leaks from the module instead of staying inside the fuel system. That leak is the defect covered by this recall.
There is no warning sign before failure. The crack happens at the fuel pump module, so the owner is not given a part-specific dashboard message before the port fails.

What's the safety risk?
Fuel leakage near an ignition source can result in a fire. If your VIN is included, schedule the recall repair soon and avoid using the vehicle if you see or smell fuel. The year and model are not enough, your VIN decides. Repair will be free at any franchised Pontiac dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2009 Pontiac G5, Cobalt, Torrent, Equinox, or Ion is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Pontiac dealer to confirm the fuel-pump-module replacement that fixes the cracked fuel-port leak risk.
- Reference recall number 12V459 when you call, and ask whether parts are ready for your VIN.
- Bring the recall notice if General Motors mailed one, plus any fuel-leak repair paperwork you already have.
- Avoid driving if you smell fuel or see fuel leaking, and ask the dealer about towing before moving the vehicle.
What happens at the repair
GM's listed repair is a fuel pump module replacement. When the repair is available for an included VIN, a Pontiac technician will remove the affected fuel pump module and install the replacement module. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Owners were told to wait for the repair window before bringing vehicles in, so call the dealer with your VIN before making a service appointment.
