2009-2011 Mci D4000-D4505 Recall 12V250: LED Fuse Heat

Recall 12V250 affects 312 2009-2011 Mci D4000, D4500, and D4505 motor coaches for overheated LED-light wiring. Repair is free at any franchised Mci dealer.

Mci is recalling 312 2009-2011 D4000, D4500, and D4505 motor coaches because excessive power draw from the LED interior lights can overheat the fuse block and connector. Heat damage can melt components and burn nearby material, increasing fire risk, and the dealer repair will be free once Mci makes it available.

What's wrong?

The interior LED lights on 2009-2011 Mci D4000, D4500, and D4505 motor coaches are part of the cabin lighting circuit. On coaches with a Vansco or IO multiplex system, that system routes and controls electrical power for the lights through a fuse block and connector. The fuse block is supposed to protect the circuit while the connector carries power to the lighting wiring.

On affected coaches, the LED interior lights draw more power than the fuse block and connector are meant to handle. That extra electrical load creates heat at the connection point. As heat builds, parts of the fuse block or connector can soften, deform, or melt, which damages the electrical connection for the interior lighting.

There is no warning sign before failure. The problem is inside the electrical connection, so an owner or operator should not rely on a visible cabin-light symptom before the fuse block or connector is damaged.

Who's affected?

Covers three Mci D-series bus models from 2009-2011, all tied to the interior lighting component.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included.

What's the safety risk?

A wiring problem can damage nearby material and cause it to burn, increasing the risk of a fire. There is no warning sign before failure, so schedule the recall repair soon and avoid using the coach if you notice heat damage or burning odor. Repair will be free at any franchised Mci dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2009-2011 Mci D4000, D4500, or D4505 motor coach is included in this recall.
  2. Watch for Mci's owner notice if you have not received it, then contact a franchised Mci dealer about the free redesigned-wiring repair.
  3. Reference recall number 12V250 when you call, and give the dealer your coach model and VIN.
  4. Reduce use of the interior LED lights until the repair is complete, because excessive power draw can overheat the fuse block and connector.
  5. Bring the recall notice to the dealer if Mci sent one.

What happens at the repair

This campaign lists dealer installation of re-designed wiring as the repair. Once the repair is available for your VIN, an Mci technician installs the updated wiring for the interior LED light circuit to reduce heat at the fuse block and connector. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. The recall began on July 17, 2012. Contact an Mci dealer with your VIN and ask whether the wiring repair is open for your coach before arranging service.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 12V250?

Recall 12V250 covers 312 2009-2011 Mci D4000, D4500, and D4505 motor coaches with LED interior lights powered by a Vansco or IO multiplex system. Excessive power draw can overheat the fuse block and connector, melt components, and raise fire risk.

What should I do if my 2009-2011 Mci D4000, D4500, or D4505 is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific motor coach is included in recall 12V250. If it is, contact an Mci dealer to schedule the redesigned wiring installation. Reference recall number 12V250 when you call, and use Mci's recall phone number, 1-866-624-2622, if you need owner support.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost, and Mci dealers install the redesigned wiring free of charge for this recall. Parts and labor are covered for included vehicles.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is fire. The LED interior lights can draw excessive power, which can overheat the fuse block and connector. If components melt, surrounding material can be damaged and burn. The free dealer repair installs redesigned wiring to address the defect.

What if I bought this motor coach used?

The free repair still applies. Recall coverage follows the VIN, not the original owner. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific Mci D4000, D4500, or D4505 is included, then reference recall number 12V250 when you contact the dealer.
