Recall 11V586 covers 98 2009-2012 Sutphen vehicles for an ESC module defect involving outer front brake application. Repair is free at any franchised Sutphen dealer.
Sutphen is recalling 98 2009-2012 Chassis, SP95, S1, and other vehicles because the electronic stability control system can misread body roll and road inclination. That false oversteer reading can apply an outer front brake and pull the vehicle from its intended path, increasing crash risk; the Sutphen dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?
The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) module on affected 2009-2012 Sutphen fire apparatus watches how the vehicle is moving and decides when brake help is needed. It uses sensor data to estimate slip angle, which is the difference between where the vehicle is pointed and where it is actually traveling. When the system reads that movement correctly, it helps the driver regain stability by applying brake force at selected wheels.
On these vehicles, body roll and road slope can distort that slip angle calculation under certain road and driving conditions. The ESC module can read the vehicle as oversteering, which means the rear of the vehicle is swinging wider than intended, even when that is not the actual condition. The system then applies the outer wheel brake on the front axle until it reads the vehicle as stable.
There is no warning sign before failure. The first sign can be an unexpected brake application or stability-control action while the vehicle is being driven.

What's the safety risk?
During an electronic stability control intervention, a slow driver reaction can let the vehicle move away from its intended path and increase crash risk. Drive cautiously and schedule the repair soon. Repair will be free at any franchised Sutphen dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2009-2012 Sutphen vehicle is included in this recall.
- Contact Sutphen or Meritor OnTrac customer service before scheduling the free ESC control-module replacement.
- Ask the service contact about the control-module repair that addresses false ESC oversteer readings and unintended outer front brake application.
- Reference recall number 11V586 when you call or speak with the service desk.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. Leave extra room and avoid sharp steering inputs on sloped or uneven roads.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Sutphen technician replaces the electronic stability control module through the Meritor WABCO recall process. That module is part of the system that reads vehicle body roll, road slope, and slip angle before brake intervention. The final dealer repair will be free once Sutphen confirms it is open for the vehicle. Parts and labor are covered under the recall.
