What's wrong?
The fast idle control software on the affected Kenworth trucks is supposed to manage engine speed while the truck is parked or otherwise held safely. Fast idle raises engine speed for work needs such as warmup or powering equipment, and the transmission controls decide whether that extra engine speed reaches the wheels.
On these trucks, the control logic allows the operator to activate fast idle while the transmission is still in gear. The recall covers trucks equipped with PACCAR MX engines and Eaton UltraShift DM or Allison automatic transmissions without auto-neutral. With the drivetrain still engaged, the truck is not isolated from the added engine speed the way it should be.
There is no warning sign before failure. The problem is in the control software, so an owner is not given a noise, leak, light, or pedal change before the fast idle command is accepted in gear.

What's the safety risk?
Unexpected acceleration while the transmission is in gear can overpower the parking brake, leading to a crash, vehicle or property damage, or injury to nearby pedestrians. If fast idle is active, confirm the transmission is not in gear and keep people clear before moving the truck. Repair will be free at any franchised Kenworth dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 Kenworth T700, 384, 386, 387, 587, 388, 365, 367, T800, or T660 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Kenworth dealer and ask whether the free engine-software update is ready for your chassis.
- Reference recall number 11V380 when you call so the dealer can match the fast-idle software recall to your VIN.
- Bring the recall notice if Kenworth mailed one, plus any service records tied to the PACCAR MX engine software.
- Avoid using fast idle with the transmission in gear until the software update is complete.
What happens at the repair
The known repair is an engine software update for the affected chassis. Once the dealer repair is available, a Kenworth technician will update the engine software so the fast idle control cannot be used in the unsafe condition described by the recall. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Before scheduling, give the service desk your VIN and ask whether the software update for campaign 11V380 is open for your specific vehicle.
