Sunnybrook is recalling 608 2003-2009 West Pointe, Bristol Bay, and Titan recreational vehicles because the plug-in remote control receiver for certain Dimplex electric fireplaces, stoves, and fireplace inserts can overheat. An overheated receiver raises the risk of a fire, and the Sunnybrook dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?
The electric fireplace in affected 2003-2009 Sunnybrook West Pointe, Bristol Bay, and Titan RVs uses a plug-in remote control receiver. That receiver is the small electrical control that accepts the signal from the handheld remote and switches the Dimplex Electraflame, Symphony, or Optiflame fireplace, stove, or insert on or off. It sits in the power path for the fireplace equipment.
The defect is heat buildup in that plug-in receiver. Instead of carrying the electrical load without excess heat, the receiver can overheat while the fireplace equipment is connected. That puts concentrated heat at an electrical control inside the RV living area and requires correction of the fireplace control setup.
There is no warning sign before failure. Do not rely on smell, discoloration, or the remote acting differently as proof that the fireplace equipment is safe to use.

What's the safety risk?

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Sunnybrook technician handles the fireplace remote receiver issue by replacing the plug-in remote control kit supplied through Dimplex. The kit addresses the receiver that can overheat in Dimplex Electraflame, Symphony, or Optiflame electric fireplaces, stoves, and fireplace inserts. The dealer repair will be free once available. Sunnybrook and Dimplex expected the recall to begin during December 2010, so confirm kit availability with the service desk before arranging the visit.
