What's wrong?
On 2008-2011 Spartan Mm chassis equipped with TRW IGEN3 intermediate steering columns, the intermediate steering column is the shaft section between the steering wheel and the steering gear. It passes the driver's steering input down through the chassis so the front wheels turn when the wheel is moved.
The problem is in the welded joint on that shaft. The recall filing says the weld around the IGEN3 steering shaft tube is mislocated, so it does not fully sit over the joint made when the spline tube and intermediate tube are pressed together. That puts the welded area in the wrong place on a part that depends on that joint to hold the steering shaft sections together under steering load.
There is no warning sign before failure. Owners should not expect a noise, warning light, or change in steering feel before the defect shows itself.
Who's affected?
The same steering-column component appears across each listed model year.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle.
What's the safety risk?
Mislocated steering column welds can leave the column below required strength. If the column separates, the driver can lose steering control and crash without warning. Limit use, stay alert for any steering change, and schedule the recall repair soon. Repair will be free at any franchised Spartan dealer once available.
