2007-2009 BMW R/K 1200 Recall 10V276: Brake Line Leak

Recall 10V276 affects 15,532 2007-2009 BMW R 1200 and K 1200 motorcycles for front brake line leaks. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.

BMW is recalling 15,532 2007-2009 R 1200 ST, R 1200 Gs, R 1200 Gs Adventure, R 1200 R, R 1200 RT, and K 1200 GT motorcycles because front brake line routing can put the lines under strain during riding. If a line splits and leaks enough to empty the brake fluid reservoir, the front brakes can fail and raise crash risk; the BMW dealer repair will be free once available.

RecallNotify doesn't check your VIN — NHTSA's official tool does. We use your email only to alert you to new recalls.

What's wrong?

The front brake lines on 2007-2009 BMW R 1200 and K 1200 series motorcycles carry brake fluid under pressure to the front brake calipers. When you squeeze the brake lever, that pressure moves through the lines and helps clamp the front brake pads onto the brake rotor. The lines have to move with the motorcycle without being pulled tight.

On affected motorcycles, the routing of the front brake lines leaves them under strain during riding. Normal vibration adds more movement at the line. When the strain is high enough, the brake line can split and begin to leak brake fluid. A leak removes fluid the brake system needs to build pressure.

There is no warning sign before failure. Once the line splits, an owner sees brake fluid at the front line or notices that the front brake does not feel right only after the leak has started.

Who's affected?

Spans six BMW motorcycle models across the 2007, 2008, and 2009 model years, all tied to the hydraulic brake system.

2007 BMW R 1200 Gs hydraulic brake system
2007 BMW R 1200 Gs Adventure hydraulic brake system
2007 BMW R 1200 R hydraulic brake system
2008 BMW R 1200 R hydraulic brake system
Units affected15,532

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific motorcycle is included.

What's the safety risk?

If brake fluid loss goes unnoticed and the reservoir runs empty, the front brakes can fail, increasing crash risk. Treat brake-fluid loss or reduced braking as a reason to stop using the motorcycle and contact a BMW dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised BMW dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2009 BMW R 1200 ST, R 1200 Gs, R 1200 Gs Adventure, R 1200 R, R 1200 RT, or K 1200 GT motorcycle is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised BMW dealer or BMW customer service to confirm the repair status before scheduling service.
  3. Ask for the free front brake-line sleeve installation that protects the strained brake lines from splitting and leaking.
  4. Bring the recall notice if BMW has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 10V276 when you call.
  5. Ride cautiously until the repair is complete. Watch for brake-fluid leaks or reduced front-brake response, and stop riding if either appears.

What happens at the repair

BMW's filing describes a free repair that installs new front brake lines with a sleeve along part of each line. Once the dealer repair is available, a BMW technician installs the updated brake lines so the routed section is better protected from strain and vibration during riding. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. If your motorcycle is included, ask a BMW dealer to confirm the open recall by VIN and explain when the repair can be completed.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 10V276?

Recall 10V276 covers 15,532 2007-2009 BMW R 1200 and K 1200 series motorcycles with front brake lines routed under strain. Vibration can split the line and leak brake fluid. BMW dealers install new sleeved brake lines for free.

What should I do if my 2007-2009 BMW R 1200 ST, R 1200 Gs, R 1200 Gs Adventure, R 1200 R, R 1200 RT, or K 1200 GT is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific motorcycle is included in recall 10V276. If it is, contact a franchised BMW dealer to schedule the brake-line repair. Reference recall number 10V276 when you call. The dealer repair is free.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost. BMW dealers install new front brake lines with a sleeve along part of the line free of charge, and BMW listed 1-800-525-7417 for owner questions.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is front brake failure after brake fluid leaks from a split front brake line. If the reservoir runs empty and the leak goes unnoticed, the front brakes can fail and increase crash risk. Check your VIN and arrange the free BMW dealer repair if included.

What if I bought this BMW motorcycle used?

The free recall repair still applies. Recalls follow the VIN, not the first owner, so a used 2007-2009 BMW motorcycle still qualifies if its VIN is included. Check your VIN, then call a franchised BMW dealer with recall number 10V276.
